Join the Global Dance Project – DROM

Are you a passionate dancer in The Hague? Do you want to be part of a stunning performance that brings together cultures through movement?

We are looking for Global Dancers to join DROM, a breathtaking dance production directed by Cristiane Azem.

DROM means “journey” or “path” in Romani. This performance tells the powerful story of the Gypsies’ long journey from Rajasthan (India) through Persia, Turkey, Central Europe, Egypt, and France, before settling in Spain. Through a fusion of dance and visual arts, we celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Roma people and their influence on world dance.

This powerful and poetic show is divided into seven parts, each representing a different stage of this journey, featuring a variety of traditional and fusion dances.

🌍 Choreographic Structure

I. Rajasthan (India) – The Origin

  • Hindu Dance – Honoring the ancestral homeland of the Romani people.
  • Kalbelia – A tribute to the nomadic gypsy culture of Rajasthan.

II. Persia

  • Homage to Zoroaster – A spiritual dance reflecting Persian mysticism.
  • Gypsies of Metal – Sword dances of the nomads from the mountains.

III. Turkey

  • Dervish Whirling – Inspired by the Sufi mystical tradition.
  • Odalisques – Oriental court dances.
  • Roman Dance – Turkish gypsy dance with vibrant rhythms.
  • Sulukule – Evoking the energy of Istanbul’s Roma neighborhoods.

IV. Central Europe

  • Ederlezi – Celebrating the spring festival of the Balkan Roma.
  • Opa Cupa – Energetic Balkan rhythms.
  • Circus Bucharest – A fusion of Roma-inspired circus arts and dance.

V. France

  • Santa Sara Kali – Honoring the patron saint of the gypsies.
  • Gypsy Swing – Inspired by Django Reinhardt and French gypsy jazz.

VI. Egypt

  • Arghul Solo – A musical dance with traditional Egyptian instruments.
  • Stick Dance (Raks Assaya) – Playful and powerful folkloric dance.
  • Candelabra Dance – Mystical dances with candelabras.

VII. Spain – Flamenco’s Cradle

  • Andalusian Solo – Reflecting the Moorish influence in Andalusia.
  • La Tarara – A traditional Spanish folk song reimagined.
  • Barefoot BulerΓ­as – Flamenco in its rawest form.
  • Finale: Nana de CamarΓ³n – A heartfelt lullaby tribute to CamarΓ³n de la Isla.
